Founded in 1929, as Newark Nut Company, Nuts.com has been in business for almost 100 years! The company, founded by Poppy Sol, was started as a small storefront business on Mulberry Street in Newark, NJ. Although much has changed, their philosophy has not, and they continue the family tradition of providing the same superb quality and service as in the past. They now employ over 120 people at a 60,000 sf warehouse.
Recently, they wanted to increase their production lines due to an increase in business. In order to do so, they were looking to make use of some of the unused air space in their warehouse.
Since this would be going into an active warehouse, we would need to be able to both design the mezzanine to work into an existing layout and also minimize the impact to operations during the install. Additionally, they were looking to reduce or eliminate the need for footings due to the disruption and mess this might cause.
Working closely with Nut.com, we came up with a design for an ~3,500 square foot custom platform that would serve their needs. For the flooring, Resindek would be used. The platform included two sliding gates to enable them to load and unload materials from the platform and two IBC staircases for employee access.
In order to customize the design to their needs, we performed a slab analysis and then used that information to design the column layout in such a way as to not overload the existing slab and thus avoid footings.
Once the approval drawings were generated, our local project manager made a site visit to make the finishing design adjustments. Additionally, P.E. Stamped Drawings, for the State of NJ, were provided for the permitting process.
When the platform production was complete, we arranged for a prompt delivery and coordinated together the best installation schedule. This included some weekend work schedules to help minimize the impact to the customer.
In the end, Nuts.com ended up with the required space needed to add new production lines for filling customer orders.
