Mark Hoy Contracting is a new family owned business that started in 2014. On one of their first projects, in addition to their original scope of work, they were asked to supply a mezzanine for their customer. For help with this, they turned to The Mezzanine Company with our over 35 years in the industry and highly trained staff of mezzanine specialists.
The Mezzanine Company was asked to design a heavy duty structure for use as both a storage area and workspace. Also, to most efficiently use the available space, we needed to build up against multiple walls with tapered building columns and unfinished wall surfaces.
To deal with the tapered columns, we designed the system to sit flush with the bottom portion of the wall, which was finished off and then did special cutouts around the two flared columns. Around the cutouts and the rest of the unfinished wall, we placed kick plate. By doing this, we were able to fit the mezzanine snugly into one of the corners of the room.
In total, we were able to gain Mark Hoy’s customer an additional 875 square feet for storage and workspace. For access to the platform, we provided a straight OSHA regulation stair and a 6’ wide double swing gate for moving pallets to and from the structure.
To handle the heavy pallet loads, the mezzanine was engineered with a 250 PSF capacity and utilized ¾” Resinboard with a Gray Diamond Seal® to add additional straight and durability for the flooring.
In order to create a safe working environment on top of the platform, we supplied handrail and kick plate to enclose all open sides. Also, at the customer’s request, we had the rail painted a special safety yellow to create a visual distinction and satisfy the customer’s color scheme.
Mark Hoy Contracting decided to do the installation themselves; so we worked closely with them during the installation process. With our assistance, they were quickly able to overcome any difficulties that arose, resulting in a speedy, successful completion of the project.
