In the late 1970s, Simon Bergson started his business as the owner-operator of a small beverage center in lower Manhattan, New York City. Since then, Manhattan Beer Distributors has strived to become the premier full-service beverage company in Metro New York. From those humble beginnings of operating out of a 4,000 square foot warehouse with 3 delivery trucks, Manhattan Beer Distributors has managed consistent growth for over 35 years. They now have over 1.5 million square feet of warehousing, strategically located throughout their distribution territory!
Recently, they were looking to gain some additional space, in one of their facilities, to support the elevated portion of a new automated conveyor system.
Manhattan Beer reached out to The Mezzanine Company to provide a solution. To meet their needs, the mezzanine platform would need to be custom designed to work around several building doors and reduce load on the existing concrete floor. Additionally, they were looking to keep the platform’s profile to a minimum in order to maximize the space above and below the mezzanine.
Lastly, because this mezzanine was just one part of a larger project, timing was of the essence in order to meet their overall project deadline.
Working closely with Manhattan Beer, we came up with a design for a 4,800 square foot rectangular shaped mezzanine that would serve their needs. For the flooring, bar grating would be used. Additionally, the mezzanine would include a straight-run IBC stair to allow for foot traffic.
The mezzanine was custom designed to reduce load on the existing concrete floor, thereby eliminating the need for new footings, Additionally, the columns of the mezzanine were specifically placed to work around the existing doors. Lastly, we were able to maximize the space above and below the mezzanine floor by providing the minimum profile possible.
Once the proposal was accepted, approval drawings were generated, and our local project manager made a site visit to make the finishing design adjustments. Additionally, we provided PE stamped drawings, for the State of New York, to be used for permitting purposes.
After the approvals were completed and a production date was scheduled, additional changed were requested to the stair location and column configuration. By swiftly and closely with our manufacturing plant and the customer, we were able to make these changes and still meet the delivery date needed.
Once the mezzanine production was complete, we arranged for a prompt delivery and coordinated together the best installation schedule. The mezzanine was then installed by our local installation team, as planned and on time.
