Costco, San Diego, CA

Challenge

The Mezzanine Company has had the privilege of working with Costco previously at their Monroe, NJ distribution facility where we have successfully completed several projects for them involving mezzanines.

Due to this relationship, when Costco needed a special equipment platform for one of their warehouses out in San Diego they contacted The Mezzanine Company.

Our goal was to design and install a large platform to create more space for their packing operations and to hold their case erectors, large pieces of equipment vital to their operations. We also had to take into account their current layout and the special seismic requirements that come with building in an earthquake prone area.

Solution

Working with our local contact out in California we were able to make several site visits to measure the space and discuss with Costco their needs for this platform. By doing this, we were able to provide a design for a structure that had no interference with their current equipment layout and would facilitate their new operations.

The result was a new nearly 5,000 sq ft platform stretching approximately 200 feet along one of the facility’s interior walls. The structure was built over 12 feet high so that it would safely clear all of the machinery that needed to be operated underneath the platform. For access to the equipment platform, we provided (2) IBC stairs with 4’ x 4’ mid landings. In addition to the stairs, we also included (2) 6 feet wide sliding gates to allow pallets of materials to be easily loaded and unloaded from the platform. We enclosed the three open sides with handrail and kick plate to create a safe working environment on top of the structure.

For the flooring we utilized a steel diamond plate flooring for maximum durability and additional support for the case erectors, (large machines), being used on top of the platform.

We worked very closely with the township officials and the factory’s engineers throughout the entire process to ensure that our design would meet all of the necessary seismic and weight load criteria. We accomplished this all without having to resort to the costly option of putting in footings for the structure, by using a combination of cross bracing and knee bracing along with performing a structural analysis of the floor.

We also assisted with the permitting process helping move the project along smoothly through all phases of the job resulting another successful and timely completed project.
