A&E Clothing Corporation, Carteret, NJ

Challenge

A&E Clothing Corporation is a medium-sized for-profit company that collects unwanted clothing and other items then resells then in the US and other developing countries.  They do work with both for-profit and non-profit organizations and have been quite successful.  This success has helped A&E Clothing to grow quite rapidly, and they recently reached out to The Mezzanine Company as they were on the verge of expanding to a new building and required a storage solution.

When they contacted us, they had just signed a lease for a new building nearby their location in Carteret, New Jersey. They wanted to get the new location up and running as soon as possible, so being able to work quickly was important.

The situation they presented us with was this.  A&E Clothing Corporation had applied for and received permits to install a door connecting the second floor offices to the warehouse.  They wanted to use this door to pass materials via forklift between the two sections, but they did not want to use the office floor as a landing zone.

Solution

To solve this situation, we came up with a plan to build a small mezzanine platform along the wall with a floor height that matched the height of their door.  By using 1/8” open bar grating for the flooring and setting the 40 square foot mezzanine at 12’-3” high, we created a small landing platform for the forklift to use without them having to worry about damaging the office area.

We designed the platform to line up perfectly with the wall the door was in, ensuring that there would not be a gap between the two.  To make the platform safe we added a custom made 6’-6” double swing gate on one side and installed handrail and kick plate on the other two sides.  The swing gate also gave access for their forklift to unload or pick up pallets while also making the whole system enclosable for when someone had to be up there.

To ensure that the project was completed in line with the customer’s timetable, we worked closely with the manufacturer, our shipping company, and the installers, so that the material could be produced delivered and installed all in quick secession allowing us to complete the project within the given time frame successfully.
